Jay Gantz and I are over….we had our final fight right before what would have been our first show last weekend….

when I went to sleep on friday night I had the best drummer, an amazing engineer and producer to make a record with who was playing bass for us, funds for the full length record we were going to start recording in a month or two and the perfect label hand picked by me to put it out on.
when I woke up on sunday I had no drummer, no band, nothing anymore

It has taken me a few days to get my head around what to do….

Rules….(we called them agreements)

No contact from anyone outside of the school except…every two weeks you call home and have a supervised phone call for 10 minutes…you can write to your siblings after more than a year…you have a few visits home after you have been there for almost 2 years that are a few days long….

random things…
had to wear my hair in a ponytail for like 4 months
all of our clothes and belongings were taken away and we had to wear plain clothes
we always had to have on a belt and have our shirts tucked in
no sex, no drugs, no violence
no jewelry, make up, hair products, tears in clothes, clothes that had any style or image, no black clothes, perfume, normal hair…

you cant judge anyone…meaning you cant make fun of anyone or call them names or say negative things about anyone
you cant talk to anybody of the opposite sex that you have feelings for or think about them or flirt
for different reasons there are people that you are on “bans” from and that means..
you can’t look at them or talk to them or about them…to you they don’t exist

music….
there was a short list of bands that were “acceptable”….here are some
john denver, neil diamond, the police, the Beatles (except happiness is a warm gun and helter skelter), bob dylan (except a few drug related songs), whitney houston…but all the music we were allowed to listen to and talk about was the same music that was used to fuck us up …everything else we couldnt talk about or reference or hint or sing or hum

I don’t even know where to start….so I guess this will be CEDU part one.

I was sent to a cult like reform school called CEDU on April 14, 1994. It is by far the most influential and unforgettable and horrifying thing I have and will ever go through in my life.

It started in the 70′s by a guy who used the psychology and practices of cults and other cult like groups…it was a 2 and 1/2 year program in Running Springs, CA….none of the staff had any sort of education or license to work with kids at all….it cost about $60,000 a year….had about 100 students at a time who were there from anything to heroine….self mutilation….rape…sex addicts….incest….eating disorders….getting kicked out of school…ect…
I was there for getting expelled from 8th grade and being a jerk….ect

so this is CEDU part one….I am gonna have to blog a lot to actually explain this to people…but I want to….especially because my story of being there is especially super sad.

It’s the only band name that I have ever come up with that I really like. I am a huge fan of Stephen King…in his book Firestarter. There is a part in the book when Andy is being held prisoner by the government because of his abilities to push people to do things with his mind. They heavily medicate him so he can’t use his abilities and he becomes addicted to the drugs. Then the power goes out and he is left alone and starts to withdraw off the drugs and is freaking out. His mind wanders and he is reminded of old Hardy Boys and other boys short stories and books..when a group of young boys camping or doing detective work are looking into a scary cave at night and wondering what could be in there..he calls it the living dark…after I read that line I was like…that’s it!
But to me it can be anything…religion, death, an unopened doorway, memories, parallel universes, other planets, space, the ocean….A day before Jay told me he wanted us to go by that name again I was swimming in a lake. I used to scuba dive and I go swimming at the YMCA with mini flippers and my scuba mask and do laps and pretend I am a fish…so I had my flippers and scuba mask on and went in the lake when I looked underwater, I couldn’t see past my feet…and the lake was really deep…I got totally freaked out and thought…THIS is the living dark…
So I was excited when Jay said he wanted us to go by that name again.

We are playing our first show on September 17th at Elm Bar in New Haven (where Rudy’s used to be).
